: How We Can Help |
Dear
Dr Poynter,
"I have just looked through
your website which I found
of much interest. I have had
a phobia of the dentist now
for some 18 years. My teeth
are as you may have guessed
in need of dental attention!
I suffered
problems as a child at various
dentists, one of which removed
eleven of my teeth all in
one go, which being a five
year old child was extremely
horrific. Sometimes I can
feel the pain that I suffered
then and this has ld to
my phobia. Although I continued
to visit dentists on and
off, each time before a
visit I was given drugs
to calm me down and hopefully
make me drowsy and stop
the panic attacks, all of
which never worked. Somehow
my body seemed to resist
anything I was given. I
then had an infection at
age eighteen and that was
my last visit. I am now
thirty six and still suffer
with terrible dental phobia!
Even thinking about visiting
a dentist makes me shake
inside.
I would
love to over come my fear
and phobia, I want to be
able to smile again with
confidence and show myself
that I will not be beaten
by this. If you could give
me advice on this I would
be so grateful and perhaps
put a smile back on my face."
Thank you,
Sarah

"I
am 45 year old male medical
Technician, who has no problem
taking stitches out of his
own arm. I have no problems
with injections but still
have an extreme fear of
dentist's.
This
is so acute that I have
not visited a dentist for
over 25 years and have real
concerns that my dental
health will begin to have
a serious impact on my physical
health. Because of where
I work at University Hospital.
I spend my day working along
side a number of dental
professionals but I still
cannot do anything to get
treatment. Any help you
can offer will be greatly
appreciated as I am desperate
to do something about the
situation".
Regards,
Peter

Dr
Poynter,
"I suffered some shoddy
dental work when I was about
10 or 11 when I chipped
one of my front teeth. I
had a cap fitted, presumably
to protect the tooth and
when this fell off, the
dentist said everything
would be fine! A number
of years later I had toothache
and the dentist (different
one) said I should have
had the cap re-fitted as
the chip hadn't healed properly!
Anyway,
to cut a long story short,
I now have a real phobia,
not helped by the fact (if
I am correct) that dentists
will not put patients to
sleep these days!
The last time I went to
the dentist in 1989, I was
completely put out for an
extraction, and that was
absolutely fine.
I
know I have dental problems
in respect of toothache
in my back left hand top
teeth and my chipped front
tooth and adjacent one,
but I just can't pluck up
the courage to do anything
about it. I will not go
to a dentist unless I have
a non-intrusive examination,
and am completely put out
for any treatment.
Thank you for your help
in advance".
Yours sincerely,
Jane
